The Metropolitan Space Laboratory is a scientific association that researches and develops computer simulation programs, which are used for the assessment and optimization of future developments of cities and urban regions.

After many years of collaborative work between various persons, the association was founded in 2000 and has been registered as a company in the Swiss state of Zurich since summer 2002.

The activities of the association include the following projects:

Case Studies:
  • Urban simulation of Berlin from 1990 to 2010: This study that was created in the 1990s shows the development of Berlin’s entire urban area.
  • Various regions of Switzerland
Research:
  • The effects of urban planning on the economic structure of a city or urban region
  • The effects of mobility and traffic on the economic structure of a city or urban region
  • A function’s supersession mechanism in relation to the future development of a city or urban region
  • Optimizing future developments in terms of the economic structure of a city or urban region
  • Optimizing the distribution of functions in a city or urban region in relation to future developments
Products:
  • Computer simulation program to assess and optimize the future developments of cities and urban regions
Literature:
  • The Metropolitan Simulation Game is a computer simulation game developed from data about urban principles. The aim of this strategic urban development game is to be able to address the problems and complexities of urban development in a playful way.
